Trail Overview

This is an adrenaline-filled, beautiful one-lane ride along the side of a mountain to an old rock building from gold mining in the area during the early 1900s. The North Star and Sundown mine tailings can be seen from the trail. The trail starts off winding through the trees with lots of rocks and roots. When it does break out of the trees, it is on a scree slope with a 1,500-foot drop-off on one side and a steep scree slope on the other. This was gold mining territory and the yellowish tailings of the Georgia Girl and Timberline mines stand out against the pine tree backdrop.

We started this trail with absolutely no problems in our 70” 4-seater Rzr. About halfway up ran into a rockslide and downed tree. Trail was too narrow to get around. Had to back down about one-tenth mile to turn around. Conditions otherwise were perfect, some water but completely doable. Beautiful trail.

567 is not in excellent condition; lots of erosion has taken a toll here. 322 gets much more interesting with plenty to keep you searching for a line. Not so much for high-clearance 4x4s, but SUVs and Subarus are not recommended. 566 turns to maintained gravel, but do not be fooled if you start this way, the entire loop is interesting and has some challenges to it.

The trail is rough from beginning to end, low tire pressure is a must for comfort. Parts of the trail are very exposed, but it's not difficult in a technical sense. The grade is long enough that low-range was necessary to prevent the transmission from overheating, so a factory 4x4 shouldn't have trouble. With a full-size rig your line will encompass the entire road in places and pinstriping is unavoidable. From the top of the trail it's a short hike to the shelf above the ruined camper, with a small pond and some spectacular views.

Beautiful trail. Not too difficult but very narrow. Probably much more suited to a side by side then the Jeep we were in. The long scree slope towards the top is narrow with no pull offs or places to pass/turn around and several off camber sections.

The trail was beautiful and we were nearly able to complete it. It was just obstructed near the end by deep snow.
