Powerline Wash Loop

Powerline Wash Loop is an ideal option for offroaders of all skill levels seeking a fast, sandy ride with fun banked turns in Colorado's North Desert. This 9.75-mile loop begins with a sandy wash segment that makes up the first quarter of the route, transitioning into a twisting double-track trail for the remaining mileage. The access point off 25 Road is typically less crowded than other starting areas in the North Desert, offering plenty of space to warm up before heading to more challenging nearby trails. With elevation changes ranging from 4,758 to 5,066 feet and a cumulative elevation gain of around 439 feet, the terrain features mild grades but presents unique driving conditions like deep sand and tight turns. While this loop carries a moderate technical rating of 4, the terrain is not overly technical but requires attentiveness due to numerous offshoots and deep sand sections where it is easy to lose the main path. Navigating out of the wash is made easier by keeping an eye on the powerline corridors and the prominent Book Cliffs to the north. Since this is a multi-directional trail, four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, dirt bikes, and ATVs must remain alert for oncoming traffic. Riders should prepare for loose desert dirt and sand as the primary surface, where maintaining momentum and appropriate tire pressure are beneficial for navigating the banked corners.
