Pine Wedge

Pine Wedge is an engaging 4.5-mile out-and-back route in northern Colorado tailored for drivers seeking a quick mountain escape with views of dense forest and high-elevation terrain. Starting at a high point of 10,649 feet and descending to 9,858 feet, this route begins as a wide, well-graded gravel forest service road that is accessible even to standard two-wheel-drive vehicles. However, as the trail descends through the Roosevelt National Forest, the corridor quickly narrows, transitioning into a tight track where mature pine trees crowd the edge of the route. This narrowing limits turnaround opportunities, making it best suited for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, small trucks, compact SUVs, and SxSs that can easily navigate the tightening clearances. As the route progresses, offroaders will find the terrain shifting from easy gravel to more technical dirt surfaces requiring active wheel placement. The trail eventually features four bypass loops winding directly through the dense timber, which are highly popular and ideally sized for ATVs and dirt bikes. While the overall technical rating is a moderate 3, the final stretches demand careful navigation due to the lack of bypasses for wider, full-sized rigs. Seasonality is a key factor here, as the high elevation means heavy snowpack can block access from late autumn through late spring, making summer and early fall the prime windows to explore this forest run.
