Trail Overview

Piedra Road will lead you north out of Pagosa Springs past the airport and a few neighborhoods. It eventually turns into a Forest Service road with two large parking areas and trailheads at the beginning. Here, you can park your trailers for ATVs or 6x6s and air down or up. The road will take you to the Williams Reservoir, several USFS campgrounds, primitive dry campsites, and along Weminuche Valley. It then turns hard left and heads up the switchbacks to 10,271 feet and several trails, including the Coldwater Creek trail. At the end of the road is a large meadow with multiple dispersed primitive campsites. There are scenic views all along the drive up--a few areas to watch out for with their steep inclines and turns.

Difficulty

This road starts out as a maintained gravel road until you make a hard left after passing through Weminuche Valley. Then the road will narrow with several switchbacks as you climb in elevation. In places, there are mild ruts and potholes. Watch your speed on these turns; cars have been known to go over when driving too fast.

Well graded dirt road with fairly minimal washboard. Trail was open all the way through. Great views along this route. Although this road was fairly dry with only a few wet/damp spots, some of the other forrest roads and trails nearby were still closed for seasonal timeframes.

A little dry, but dust cleared quickly. Washboard in some places from spring grading so the road holds its surface well. We encountered vehicles routinely every 2ish minutes on this road. Ditches and drainage channels well established. We encountered 2 sheriffs on motorcycles, and for us the surface was very stable.

this road is 35-40 miles north out of Pagosa Springs, at the Williams creek lake intersection you go west head across the Wheminuce valley which is a private ranch. make sure you have plenty of fuel, food, drink and cold weather gear, the weather can turn quickly with 100 mph wind and everything from rain to snow, there's a section that has recently had a land slide beware in heavy rain. this is Bear and mountain lion country. there's also a few 50"- trails for bikes and small side by side. there's primitive tent camping along the trail, no RV or bumper pull access. no cell service and emergency service is limited,
