Trail Overview

Grassy Gulch Road is a steep, rocky, single-lane road that is known for access to the hiking trail that goes to Ptarmigan Lake. There are turnouts for oncoming traffic and some dispersed camping. Along with being rocky, there are switchbacks, many drainage swells, a few shallow water crossings, and part of the trail is a shelf road. It is a constant climb, but you are rewarded at the end with a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains.

Fun, fun, fun - moderate challenge and beautiful. I'll return later this summer to get to top and lake. The top of the trail (just at treeline) was impassable by anything more than 2 wheels due to snow drifts. Walking to ptarmigan lake is impossible due to snow and runoff.
