Trail Overview

There are a lot of different trail combinations in this area, so you can decide how long or how challenging you want it to be. There is some camping along the trail and parking just before the trail along Highway 103. Echo Lake and Mt. Evans are only a few more miles past the trailhead, so check those out as well.

Difficulty

Moderate. Much of this trail is easy; however, the eastern side of the main loop has gotten chewed up with large ruts in a few places. It could become difficult in the future. Side trip on 246.1B is very steep and narrow at the north end.

This was my first off road trip with my Ranger, it's mostly rocky trail with some steep ish up or downhills that it had no problem with. A little bit of a lift would help a ton but definitely doable in you're pavement princess Jeep if you wish

Honestly hard to recommend this one. It seems most people come up here to shoot, there are one or two moments with good views but this is mostly wooded with some tight pinstriping spots. The only thing of note are the ruts and about halfway through the loop section. The other reports are 100% correct that you will require larger tires or lockers to get through this part. Good Aspen exposure, so better done in the fall but the general area has the attention of the forest service and this trail is getting quite rutted and disrespected so make sure to stay the trail and pick up your damn trash and any that you see if you can

Trail is open. Not very crowded only passed a couple jeeps and one ATV. Trail is primarily one lane with an occasional cut out to park/pass. Most parts of the trail are loose rock with the occasional two track dirt lane. Most of the trail can be done in 2wd however there are a few inclines that require 4wd and one particular section, as previously stated on the north end, that required the use of both my front and rear locker. My car sits on 37’s and has no clearance issues but anything less than 35’s would have some issues on that one section. Other than that it’s a fun trail with decent width on the path.

One section had deep moguls (wash out) that will require a lifted vehicle and 35 inch tires unless able to bypass via open tree line.

Only a few of us on the trail. Ran the loop clockwise and only the highlighted navigated area that you download. There are many splits and other trails to try. Trail is easy until deep off camber section on the east side of loop. Great time of year to see the leaves change.

Very rutted and rocky should be at least a 5 the entrance will test your vehicle!! I got around 75% around the loop until I found an obstacle way too extreme for me so I had to make a tight turn around or risk a cv or worse!! Amazing trail definately not a 4. Good views and plenty of camping

trail is rocky throughout. deep ruts and some areas with large rocks. one section can be quite challenging for newer offroad drivers and test ground clearance for stock 4x4 vehicles (see red waypoint on added photo for general area). lots of camping spots, some with amazing views.

A few people camping- we had to break and move a few downed trees. I believe this was the first weekend that the trails were open. Many offshoots in the “canyon” section and some beautiful flowers and flat-top feels. It feels underused with the vegetation being quite close at times, so make sure you get out here and use this beautiful, fun trail.
