Trail Overview

Parking in the parking area is only recommended for those trailering in. You can unload and ride from there. All others can simply continue onward and access the Park, the various trails around the lake, and the Castles trail. This 8-mile stretch of well-maintained dirt road provides access to the Buckhorn Lakes Park owned by the City of Montrose. Gaining roughly 3,000 feet of elevation, it offers beautiful views of the San Juans and the Uncompahgre Valley while traveling through the sage adobes to beautiful aspen and pine forests. It's especially lovely in early Summer for the wildflowers and in the Fall for the Aspens. Elevation climb is significant, so be prepared. Roughly 30 minutes each way to get to the lakes, but allow plenty of time for exploring around while you're up there.
