Trail Overview
Browns & Breakneck is an exceptional high-elevation loop for scenic-minded offroaders seeking stunning alpine vistas and beautiful aspen groves near Fairplay, Colorado. Starting about five miles south of Fairplay off US Highway 285, this 17-mile route offers a moderate four-wheel-drive challenge with an elevation range stretching from 9,700 feet to over 12,300 feet. The trail primarily traverses forested sections of Pike National Forest, providing beautiful golden canopies during the autumn months when the aspen trees turn. While much of the main loop is tucked into the trees, the western spur climbing toward Lamb Mountain breaks above the tree line into the alpine tundra, rewarding drivers with breathtaking, unobstructed views of Horseshoe Gulch and the surrounding peaks.
With a technical difficulty rating of 3, the trail is well-suited for stock high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, OHVs, and SxSs, though the extremely narrow southern leg presents a unique challenge due to long stretches with limited passing room. The primary surface consists of dirt and rocky sections that can become muddy or slick in wet conditions, requiring careful tire placement on the tighter segments. Because this route reaches elevations above 12,000 feet, it is best traveled during the summer and early fall when the high-altitude passes are clear of heavy snowpacks. Visitors should plan for a total distance of approximately 20 miles if they include the western spur to Lamb Mountain, making it a perfect half-day adventure packed with diverse terrain and rugged Colorado beauty.
