Trail Overview

Set against the striking backdrop of the Book Cliffs within an arid high-desert landscape managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), BLM 149 offers a scenic mountain-foothill drive. Accessed directly off Highway 139 through an initial wire gate that requires opening and closing upon entry and exit, this 1.7-mile out-and-back spur climbs into rolling desert bluffs. Outdoor enthusiasts travel this path primarily to reach exceptional dispersed camping sites, take in sweeping cliffside vistas, or explore quiet desert terrain close to town. The driving surface consists of soft silt, sand, and fine dirt marked by significant longitudinal wheel ruts and steep hill climbs, earning a technical Grade 3 difficulty rating. Immediately after passing the entrance gate, the route presents 6- to 8-inch ruts cut into soft soil. Near 0.3 miles, the trail steepens considerably while wheel trenches deepen to 10 to 12 inches. Beyond this initial technical climb, the path levels out into a smoother, highly enjoyable track, passing secluded campsite turnouts at 0.8 miles and 1.2 miles before concluding at a spacious hilltop campsite with panoramic views. Avoid this trail during rainy weather, as the fine desert silt turns to severe sticky mud.

Difficulty

Earning a technical Grade 3 difficulty rating, this 1.7-mile out-and-back spur presents notable ground-clearance and traction challenges. As seen in the photos, primary obstacles include deep 10- to 12-inch longitudinal ruts carved into soft dirt and silt, paired with a steep, sandy hill climb around 0.3 miles. Drivers should maintain smooth, steady momentum up the incline, carefully straddle central wheel trenches to protect underbody components, and strictly avoid traveling when wet, as rain transforms the fine soil into impassable mud.
