Trail Overview

Originating from Mitchell Road, BLM 124 is a highly scenic desert route that guides explorers directly north toward a striking canyon landscape. While the journey begins as a deceptively simple and flat dirt path, the character of the trail shifts dramatically around the 0.6-mile mark. As you press deeper into the scrub-lined desert, the unmaintained track becomes noticeably uneven and rutted. Drivers must remain highly vigilant, as the route is frequently crossed by intersecting dirt bike trails, and you will likely share the area with fast-moving moto traffic and horseback riders. The journey concludes spectacularly at a large, leveled dispersed camping area capable of comfortably accommodating up to eight vehicles. Offering breathtaking, panoramic views of the imposing canyon walls, the sprawling valley below, and distant mountain ranges, this terminus serves as an absolutely perfect basecamp for off-roaders wanting a rugged escape just a short distance from town.

BLM 124 earns a solid Level 3 Moderate rating due to the significant terrain degradation that begins just past the half-mile mark. Explorers will encounter uneven, unmaintained dirt featuring large, unavoidable erosion ruts measuring up to 11 inches deep. Navigating these deep tracks forces vehicles into challenging 15-to-20-degree off-camber angles. Because the dirt surface in these specific sections is exceptionally soft and yielding, traction is easily compromised. There are numerous visible signs along the route of previous vehicles losing their line and getting heavily stuck in the soft shoulders. High clearance and capable 4x4 or advanced AWD systems are recommended. Furthermore, a strict severe weather warning applies: absolutely do not enter this area if it has rained recently or if precipitation is forecasted. When wet, this horrendous desert soil turns into an impassable mire guaranteed to trap even the most capable off-road trucks.
