Trail Overview

This out-and-back route begins directly from a residential neighborhood in the charming mountain town of Eagle, Colorado, and quickly climbs into an area locally known as the Boneyard. The lower section is a popular destination for residents, with the first few switchbacks serving as favorite vantage points for sunsets and scenic views overlooking town. As the trail continues higher, it winds through a network of well-used mountain bike trails before vehicle traffic gradually thins out a mile or two from the trailhead. The route climbs steadily before reaching a broad, flat bench where numerous dispersed camping opportunities branch off to the right. These primitive campsites, many offering outstanding views of the surrounding valleys and mountains, are among the area’s most sought-after camping spots and often fill quickly during peak seasons. Farther along, the trail transitions to a scenic shelf road that traverses the hillside before eventually ending at a closed gate marking the boundary of private property. A separate BLM trail departs from the area and descends deep into the valley below, ending at a gate where hikers and cyclists may continue, but motorized travel is prohibited.
