Trail Overview

Apex Road is a scenic, graded gravel road that runs from south to north through Colorado's historic mining country. The southern portion is smoother and well-maintained, suitable for most vehicles in dry conditions. As you continue north, particularly after turning onto Elk Park Road, the trail becomes progressively rougher, with bumpy, rocky sections and areas of erosion. While there are no major obstacles, careful line selection is necessary to avoid bottoming out in some spots. The northern end offers camping opportunities, making it a popular route for hunters and hikers seeking access to the surrounding wilderness.

Difficulty

While there are no major obstacles, the hills do have loose rocks and ruts on them, with puddles in the trees as you descend on the northern end of the trail. This trail has the potential to be challenging during or after a moisture event.

History

Apex Road passes near the ghost town of Apex, founded in 1891 during Colorado's gold rush era. At its peak, Apex had a population of around 1,000 residents and boasted amenities such as hotels, a dance hall, and a newspaper. Today, remnants of this mining town can still be explored along the route. The road also offers access to several other historic sites and trails in the area, including Mammoth Gulch and Kingston Peak, providing a glimpse into the region's rich mining history and stunning natural beauty.

There’s one washout getting deeper. The trail doesn’t allow much other than just nose straight in.

Dusty, a little more crowded in the afternoon. Nice riding. the road is fully open, no snow anywhere. There was some larger puddles that were a blast to fly through on the bike. Great day

There was a lot of equipment out there fixing up the roads. Almost no washboards. Smooth sailing the whole way for us.

Entered from Tolland southbound to the Kingston Peak turnoff. The trail was dry and pretty rocky. Not too technical, but you will definitely need to air down.

The trail is clear until the intersection of Kingston Peak Rd., where deep snow drifts prevent going further.

Snow and ice around Apex that require a little extra umpf to get up and some rocky river beds that require a little patience

We came at it from the North at Tolland. The snow was immediately deeper than I wanted to get in to without recovery gear.

This is not a 3/10 for bikes. 8/10 for bikes.

The south part of apex until the left turn is just a smooth dirt road, though right now it’s pretty badly washboarded which is annoying more than anything. After the left turn the trail could still be done by a Honda crv if you’re being careful, just has quite a few rocks and dips. The north part of the trail is about a 3 and definitely requires decent clearance and good line choices, but was quite easy and fun in my little subaru.

Drove Apex road in an Audi Q5 as part of an overnight camping trip, although I'd recommend a more suitable high clearance vehicle. The road up from Tolland for the first 3-4 miles is very rough and rocky with one big washout requiring strategic wheel placement with some 3 wheeled tripod action. Obviously a proper 4x4 will cruise up, but just something to consider.
