Trail Overview
Apex Road is a scenic, graded gravel road that runs from south to north through Colorado's historic mining country. The southern portion is smoother and well-maintained, suitable for most vehicles in dry conditions. As you continue north, particularly after turning onto Elk Park Road, the trail becomes progressively rougher, with bumpy, rocky sections and areas of erosion. While there are no major obstacles, careful line selection is necessary to avoid bottoming out in some spots. The northern end offers camping opportunities, making it a popular route for hunters and hikers seeking access to the surrounding wilderness.
Difficulty
While there are no major obstacles, the hills do have loose rocks and ruts on them, with puddles in the trees as you descend on the northern end of the trail. This trail has the potential to be challenging during or after a moisture event.
History
Apex Road passes near the ghost town of Apex, founded in 1891 during Colorado's gold rush era. At its peak, Apex had a population of around 1,000 residents and boasted amenities such as hotels, a dance hall, and a newspaper. Today, remnants of this mining town can still be explored along the route. The road also offers access to several other historic sites and trails in the area, including Mammoth Gulch and Kingston Peak, providing a glimpse into the region's rich mining history and stunning natural beauty.
