Trail Overview

This scenic, easy-going route is perfect for beginners, scenic tourers, and those looking for a relaxing dirt road drive through the peaceful valleys east of Buena Vista. Connecting Highway 9 on the north with the Countryside Tour to the south, the path winds through beautiful sections of the Pike National Forest. The central portion of the drive closely follows 31 Mile Creek, offering travelers scenic views of rolling hills, stands of pine, and proximity to prominent peaks like Dicks Peak and Black Mountain. As a graded dirt road with a very low technical rating, this trail is accessible to most standard high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SUVs, and SxSs during dry conditions. However, travelers should be prepared for seasonal mud holes, particularly within the national forest boundaries after spring snowmelt or heavy summer rains, which can occasionally block the path or require careful navigation. The route offers excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and provides convenient access to deeper dispersed camping and trail networks within the region.

We began our drive on the north side, heading south in the early morning. Rain from the night before left a few sections of the trail a bit slick, but still manageable with a standard-size 4x4 vehicle. The countryside was absolutely beautiful, and the weather couldn’t have been better—starting in the crisp 40s around 6 a.m. and warming into the 50s by 8 a.m.

Trail was in great condition. Remote riding you won’t see anyone. There are many spurs and other fun areas to explore, nothing difficult. Can go south to Teller Rd 1 and take dirt all the way to Salida.
