Trail Overview
Forest Service Road 0180-006, also known as Tippecanoe, serves as a wide, single-track dirt connector threading through dense, scenic National Forest land. Passing through an initial seasonal gate, the route drops through a lush canopy of mature pines and mixed evergreens before plunging into a steep creek valley. Earning a formidable difficulty rating of 5, the road character shifts drastically depending on how far down you travel. The upper section is relatively tame and acts as a fantastic staging zone, featuring a series of massive dispersed campsites tucked off the main path—some large enough to comfortably accommodate ten or more vehicles. As the trail continues past these sprawling clearings and pitches down toward the bottom of the creek, the smooth dirt gives way to an intensely rocky, rutted, and severely steep track.
Difficulty
Rated as a level 5, this route demands serious caution and highly capable equipment to navigate safely. The upper stretch is forgiving, but the descent into the creek bottom transforms into a treacherous mix of very loose soil, sharp embedded rocks, and deep bumps. The steep grade combined with the loose surface material severely compromises traction, causing tires to slide uncontrollably. Attempting the lower portion of this trail requires maximum mechanical grip and significant ground clearance to avoid bottoming out in the deep washouts or getting stranded at the bottom of the canyon, unable to climb back up.
