The Outs

The Outs is a scenic 2.7-mile off-road trail perfect for four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and dirt bikes looking to explore the beautiful boulder-strewn landscapes of the Spangler Hills Off-Highway Vehicle Area. Departing from the popular OHV riding area, this trail takes off-roaders through a stunning garden of massive granite boulders while offering panoramic views of the surrounding desert and the city of Ridgecrest in the distance. The terrain features a mix of mostly easy two-track trail, sandy washes, and rolling rocky hills that keep the drive engaging without being overly demanding. With elevation ranging from 3,076 to 3,404 feet, drivers will navigate moderate climbs and descents, enjoying bermed corners that add a fun, flowing dynamic to the ride. While much of the trail maintains a moderate technical rating of 4, a notably challenging and technical obstacle awaits near the western end, which can be easily bypassed by using the alternative route directly to the north. Washouts are common along the sandy stretches, requiring drivers to stay alert and choose their lines carefully. Cell service is generally reliable with up to three bars of 5G coverage throughout the route, but the harsh desert environment demands proper preparation. Visitors should avoid traveling during the extreme summer temperatures, carry ample water, and ensure their four-wheel-drive vehicles or SxSs are fully prepared for remote desert conditions.
