Trail Overview
Kiss The Boundary is an exciting, fast-paced desert track perfect for novice to intermediate offroaders looking to experience the rolling terrain and sweeping vistas of the Spangler Hills OHV Area. This 3.9-mile route features a mix of soft sand and dirt, skirting the boundary line between the open riding area and BLM-managed wilderness. With a modest elevation change ranging from 3,031 to 3,674 feet, the trail is well-suited for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, dirt bikes, and ATVs. Drivers will encounter banked, bermed corners carved out by dirt bikes, fast wash sections, and occasional deep whoops that require moderate technical control and a steady hand on the wheel.
Traversing this stretch offers expansive views of the surrounding desert valley and rugged mountain backdrops, with the potential for spotting low-flying military training jets from nearby bases. Visitors should keep a sharp eye out for the protected desert tortoise, which often shares the sandy terrain, and be mindful of active wildlife regulations in this sensitive habitat. Cellular reception remains relatively reliable with up to two bars of 5G service along most of the route, adding a layer of convenience. The optimal season to ride is from late fall to early spring when temperatures are milder, making it a fantastic, quick run to add to any Mojave Desert itinerary.
Access Description
Located within the Spangler Hills Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Area managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ridgecrest Field Office. All off-highway vehicles must have a valid California Green or Red Sticker, or an appropriate out-of-state OHV permit. Visitors must strictly adhere to regulations protecting the Mojave desert tortoise, a threatened species; do not touch or disturb tortoises and check under vehicles before driving.
