Trail Overview
Stump Springs Road (FS 7S005) is a classic "tale of two roads." While the lower section lulls you with pavement, the real backcountry experience begins on the upper 10-mile stretch, where the asphalt ends and the Decomposed Granite (DG) begins. This route acts as a vital spine connector for the forest service network, offering a fairly smooth, efficient transit through the high country. The surface is primarily graded dirt and DG, providing excellent traction, but don't let the smooth ride fool you into speeding. The road width varies wildly, pinching down from a comfortable two-lane width to a single-lane shelf in many areas. You'll navigate a series of hairpin turns that demand a defensive driving style—always expect oncoming traffic around the bend! The route also traverses a significant burn area, offering stark, expansive views but also posing a risk of downed trees, especially after a storm. It’s a functional, scenic, dusty highway that gets you deeper into the range.
Difficulty
This trail is a solid Rating 1 because it is a maintained forest road designed for travel. The surface of Decomposed Granite usually packs down hard and smooth, eliminating the need for 4WD in dry conditions. There are no technical rock crawling sections or deep mud pits. However, the difficulty here is situational rather than technical: the road narrows significantly to single-vehicle width in spots, and the hairpin turns create blind corners. Drivers must be alert for oncoming traffic and prepared to reverse to a pullout if necessary. It is accessible to almost any high-clearance vehicle.
