Trail Overview
This is a lightly challenging, rocky single-lane trail that climbs quickly above 8,000 feet through the severe 2020 Creek Wildfire burn scar. The trail features a persistently rocky tread and rutted surface. This route provides high-elevation access to the Hole Trail and the Ansel Adams Wilderness boundary, offering views over the devastated but vast landscape. The trail passes through private property. Respect the locked gate at the Strawberry Mine access road (37.54487, -119.28658). Just after passing the mine access road, there is a minor trail washout at 37.54714, -119.28636. Strawberry Mine is visible off to the West as you climb further up the trail.
Difficulty
The difficulty is due to the rough, continuous rocky tread and minor washouts. High clearance is mandatory to prevent undercarriage damage, and 4WD is required for traction on the steeper, loose climbs.
History
The trail is located near the historic Strawberry Mine, indicating its purpose as a high-altitude mining and administrative access route. Its current state and exposed nature are entirely due to the massive 2020 Creek Fire event.
