Trail Overview

Stevens Mine Loop offers a scenic and mildly challenging desert route for four-wheel-drive vehicles, side-by-sides (SxSs), and OHV riders looking to explore the historic mining landscapes of the Spangler Hills OHV Area. Spanning approximately 6.5 miles, this loop stands out for its easy access from Trona Road and its route through desert washes and rolling hillsides. Ranging in elevation from 2,773 feet to 3,393 feet, the trail features a mix of loose dirt, deep sand, and sections of loose rock that warrant a technical rating of 4. Drivers can complete the loop in either direction, navigating mild elevation changes with a cumulative gain of 262 feet and a cumulative loss of 699 feet. The eastern portion of the loop winds close to the historical Stevens Mine, where adventurers can view sealed mine shafts and explore the rocky hillsides. While the trail is mostly straightforward, deep sandy wash crossings and occasional rocky segments require high-clearance vehicles and careful line selection. Visitors should prepare for extreme desert heat, particularly during the summer months, and carry recovery gear suitable for loose sand. Limited LTE cellular service is available along portions of the route, but self-sufficiency and downloading maps for offline use are highly recommended when traveling through this remote landscape.
