Trail Overview

Situated within a vibrant, moss-draped conifer forest in the Tahoe National Forest, South Sagehen Creek (FS 0011-010) offers a remarkably scenic and lush backcountry traverse. Functioning as a vital connector route, this single-lane dirt and rocky path links the terminus of Forest Service Road 11 to the Sagehen Hills area, eventually routing traffic back toward Highway 89. Outdoor recreationists utilize this thoroughfare to explore deeper forest networks, secure secluded dispersed campsites, and take in sweeping valley floor vistas from elevated cliffside stretches. The driving surface consists of a narrow dirt track heavily mixed with embedded stones and loose cobbles, earning an accessible Grade 1 difficulty rating. Regardless of the starting direction, the trail steadily ascends toward a high saddle where the surrounding environment transforms into a uniquely green landscape filled with thick shrubs, young saplings, and striking bright moss clinging to the bases of massive pines. Along the journey, travelers will encounter a tight log squeeze where a fallen tree has been narrowly cut, physically preventing wide rigs from passing through. Additionally, sections of encroaching brush create a tight corridor alongside exposed hillside drop-offs before the track levels out, offering a pristine, flat clearing perfect for a single-vehicle dispersed camp setup.

Difficulty

Earning an accessible Grade 1 difficulty rating, this rocky forest connector features a firm dirt foundation that successfully avoids extreme technical hazards. Deep washouts, severe ruts, and massive high-clearance boulders are non-existent under standard dry conditions. However, non-technical challenges require careful navigation, most notably a very narrow cut-log passage that restricts excessively wide rigs from progressing through the corridor. Secondary considerations include negotiating uphill rocky stretches, maneuvering along a narrow cliffside shelf with a steep drop-off, and enduring light vehicle pinstriping from overgrown trackside bushes. Drivers should maintain a slow, steady momentum over the scattered rocks, hug the inside line on shelf roads, and carefully gauge their vehicle's total width before attempting the log squeeze.
