Trail Overview

This 10-mile out-and-back trail climbs over 1,700 feet in 5 miles, starting and returning to Soldier Mountain Reservoir - FS 37N03. The trail travels through the Lassen National Forest, surrounded by lots of black oak and pine trees throughout the substantial climb. The trail surface consists of hard-packed dirt with some gravel and is very dusty throughout the drive. The route maintains a width of 1 to 1.5 vehicles and features various switchbacks as it ascends toward Soldier Mountain Lookout. Unfortunately, there are very few views along most of the route unless you can reach the top at the lookout, where the payoff for the climb becomes apparent. A locked gate is located less than 850 yards from the top, so visitors should check with a local ranger station to confirm current opening and closing schedules for the gate before planning this trip, as access to the final viewpoint may depend on gate status.
