Trail Overview

Sierra Buttes Road is a very scenic and approachable dirt trail that conveniently kicks off right outside a local neighborhood near the Sierra City transfer station. As you leave the pavement behind, you will embark on a gradual, continuous climb up the forested mountain. The trail primarily consists of a relatively wide, hard-packed dirt and gravel surface that winds its way through beautiful, dense pine trees and shady, vibrant green foliage. As you climb higher, the thick canopy occasionally breaks to reveal absolutely breathtaking, expansive views of the deep, heavily wooded valley and distant mountain ridges, offering perfect photo opportunities along the dirt pull-outs. There are a couple of dispersed camping spots available along the route, though they lack these impressive views and are best saved for when you are in a pinch. Be completely sure you want to take this route before you start, as there are absolutely no trailer turn-offs; once you begin your journey down this road, you are committed to finishing the entire drive.

Difficulty

The road surface is quite smooth and well-maintained, featuring only a few minor bumps and scattered patches of loose, small gravel to navigate. You will not encounter any deep ruts, significant ledges, or large boulders that require highly technical driving skills. While a dedicated high-clearance vehicle is not strictly necessary to complete this gradual mountain climb, having one is still highly recommended for added peace of mind when crossing the occasional loose rocky sections near the cliff edges. Remember to keep your speed in check with reduced sightlines.
