Trail Overview

Monarch - FS 93-002, accessed from Sierra City via Sierra Buttes Road and Butcher Ranch Road - FS 12E07, delivers a highly scenic but demanding journey as it steadily climbs its way up to Packer Saddle. The trail starts relatively tame before aggressively ramping up the intensity. This route is significantly more difficult than the lower roads, primarily due to the daunting, high-elevation cliff edges that are definitely not for the faint of heart. Along these exposed, sun-drenched shelf roads, you will navigate incredibly uneven surfaces featuring loose gravel and harsh, embedded jagged rocks protruding directly from the cuts in the hillside. As you climb higher, the trail eventually transitions back into a dense, shady alpine forest filled with towering pines. In these heavily wooded upper sections, you will encounter softer dirt areas where water has settled on the trail, creating muddy washouts, standing puddles, and minor ruts that require careful tire placement. It is a relentless, steady climb the entire way, ultimately rewarding brave drivers with absolutely stunning mountain views.

Difficulty

While the trail does not feature massive rock-crawling ledges, the continuous presence of loose gravel and sharp, embedded jagged rock makes this a tough and potentially damaging obstacle course for any low-clearance vehicle. Furthermore, the combination of minor ruts and muddy washouts in the upper forested sections demands solid traction and mindful driving. Because a significant portion of this drive involves hugging a steep, sheer drop-off on an uneven shelf road, a capable high-clearance 4x4 and a steady nerve are highly recommended to safely complete the climb to Packer Saddle.
