Trail Overview
This beautiful trail leads you into the Sheldon Wildlife Refuge, with a short side trip to Yellow Peak, where a fire lookout offers expansive views of the Nevada desert. The trail surface is primarily a mix of dirt and gravel, making for an enjoyable ride. Be sure to stop by Catnip Reservoir and take in the scenery! The trail is best suited for 4x4 vehicles and is recommended during dry conditions. Along the way, you may spot a variety of wildlife, including badgers, antelope, mule deer, wild horses, and numerous bird species.
Difficulty
The difficulty of the trail comes from its remote location. Make sure to have gas, bring a spare tire, a tire patch kit, and plenty of provisions in case of any issues.
History
The Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1931 to protect the then-endangered American pronghorn, spans over 575,000 acres in northwestern Nevada. It is the third-largest wildlife refuge in the lower 48 states. The area features a rich history, from ancient geological formations to 19th-century ranching, and modern conservation efforts that continue to preserve its unique wildlife and landscapes.
