Trail Overview
Sawtooth - FS 6, a beautiful and highly accessible forest route! Starting just behind a quiet Truckee neighborhood, this trail acts as a vital recreation thoroughfare, winding its way through a stunning, mature ponderosa pine forest before eventually connecting to the main east/west route, Mt Watson Boulevard - 73. The road is generously wide, offering 1.5 to 2 lanes of travel, and primarily consists of excellent, smooth dirt and well-graded gravel. Along the way, you will pass well-marked trailheads, camping restriction signs, and access points for various spur roads and logging infrastructure. Because this is such a beautiful and popular area, it is incredibly important to keep your eyes peeled and share the road safely, as you will frequently encounter runners, cyclists, and hikers enjoying the dappled shade.
Difficulty
Earning a very mild Grade 1 difficulty rating, this thoroughfare is a relaxing, scenic drive that is wonderfully suited for a comfortable forest cruise. The path is exceptionally wide and generally smooth, meaning there are no deep ruts, steep drop-offs, or complex rock crawls to worry about. The primary obstacles you will encounter are small, intermittent sections of old, broken pavement breaking through the dirt surface, as well as minor patches of loose, scattered rocks on gentle inclines. To ensure a completely stress-free ride and protect your undercarriage, simply reduce your speed when approaching the degraded asphalt, pick a smooth line, and allow your suspension to easily absorb the minor bumps. Always maintain a cautious, steady momentum to ensure you can safely stop for the pedestrians and cyclists sharing the trail.
