Trail Overview
Sawmill Road is the primary west-to-east corridor in this section of the Sequoia National Forest, departing from Rancheria Road North and climbing over 2,300 feet in just over 7.5 miles. The trail runs along a shelf road with a canyon dropping away to the south and a drainage ditch to the north, giving it a defined and focused character throughout. The western half travels under a dense forest canopy with evidence of the 2021 French Fire visible all around. As the trail pushes east, the canopy thins and the terrain opens up, with the eastern half more exposed and better maintained due to private property access in the area and reduced elevation changes. Dramatic views of the valley below, Lake Isabella, and the surrounding mountains emerge as the trail climbs and the trees give way. Whitetail deer are frequently spotted along this corridor, particularly in the forested western section.
Difficulty
Sawmill Road rates a 2 under dry conditions. Ruts up to 12 inches deep appear frequently along the route and are the primary technical challenge. The sustained 2,300-plus foot elevation gain over 7.5 miles adds physical demand to the drive. Conditions can shift to more challenging territory when wet, with the hard-packed dirt turning muddy and intensifying the rut sections. The western half under the canopy holds moisture longer than the more open eastern half. Fire permits are required when allowed, and current restrictions should be verified before heading out.
