Trail Overview

Accessed directly off Highway 89 or from the opposite end via the Sagehen OHV Loop 2 network, Sagehen Hills (FS 0089-036) serves as a scenic, easy-going woodland connector. Set within a sun-drenched conifer forest in the Tahoe National Forest, this welcoming pathway winds through tall pine stands bordered by vibrant, low-growing brush. Outdoor enthusiasts and overland travelers frequent this thoroughfare to link up with deeper backcountry trails, access the adjacent off-road riding areas, or enjoy peaceful dispersed camping. The driving surface consists of a relatively flat, well-traveled dirt and gravel track. Because it is a connector road, conditions are easily manageable regardless of the direction traveled. Seasonal swing gates are positioned near the highway entrance and further along the route to manage winter weather closures. Transitioning between a wide gravel corridor and a single-lane dirt path mixed with small embedded rocks, the trail offers numerous turnouts to allow oncoming traffic to pass comfortably. A notably large dispersed camping clearing featuring a stone fire ring provides ample room for multiple vehicles to set up for the night beneath the canopy. While the road is mostly smooth, a few low-lying stretches exist that hold water and become muddy during rainy periods. Ultimately, the track remains in excellent condition as it traverses the forest, ending at a prominent three-way junction with Sagehen Hill Spur and Sagehen OHV Loop 2.

Difficulty

This woodland connector features a smooth dirt and gravel foundation entirely free of technical off-road obstacles. Deep mud pits, steep shelf drop-offs, and high-clearance boulder fields are completely absent under normal dry weather conditions. Non-technical considerations are limited to watching for oncoming traffic along the narrower single-lane segments, navigating minor surface rocks, and verifying the status of the seasonal closure gates before travel. As seen in the field photos, drivers should be prepared for shallow puddles and potentially slick, muddy patches following a rainstorm, but can otherwise maintain a relaxed speed while utilizing frequent roadside turnouts.
