Trail Overview

Forest Road 2N61Y runs through Round Valley to Old Timer Canyon, roughly parallel to the easier Burns Canyon Road (2N02), which makes for a nice medium-difficulty run in itself, or coupled with the run up to Heartbreak Ridge or a longer trip to Pioneertown. This trail will provide most drivers an enjoyable day of off-roading with some amazing and stunning views and the excitement of the historical mining that once was popular all over the mountain range. Also, the trail offers a lot of dispersed camping, which is unique to this trail, making it an excellent overland route when looking for an overland adventure in the Big Bear area.

Difficulty

Though the route has several rocky and technical sections, it gets its "Moderate" rating primarily due to one gnarly section near the southeast end, which has in recent years become optional. An easy, illegal bypass has been cut around it.

Fun trail but definitely recommend bringing a buddy for a spotter. High clearance absolutely required.

From 2N01 or Hwy 38 to Heartbreak Ridge is a great trail. It's a "7" from Burns Canyon to Heartbreak Ridge. I'd recommend If in an Average 4x4 with 35's to only traverse this section Leaving Heartbreak Ridge to Burns Canyon as going Up would be more challenging and may require a wench. Forgot to get good pics of this section.

Our trip started in Pioneer town on 2N02 then side step to 2N61Y. Very fun trail but def required 4x4 with high clearance. Pick your line carefully and take your time.

Loose rocks and gravel, steep uneven grades. The rock garden halfway through isn’t for the faint of heart. I would recommend a spotter for that spot, I didn’t have one and wished I would have.

My ZR2 on 33s took it like a champ. Was a little nerve racking with no spotter though. Recommend a buddy to spot.

The rock garden about halfway through was tough with a Tacoma on 33"s but doable with a spotter. Nice trail to add a challenge to 2N02
