Trail Overview

Heartbreak Ridge is one of the less commonly traveled 4x4 trails in the San Bernardino National Forest near Big Bear, California. With several rock gardens, several spots with rollover risks, and a difficult narrow canyon, this trail will provide most drivers an enjoyable day of off-roading with some amazing views and the excitement of the historical mining that once was popular all over the mountain range. Heartbreak Ridge is also a special place for So Cal Broncos. The Alan Rowe Monument was placed there and dedicated during Big Bear Bronco Bash back in 2005, and each year at BBBB since, there has been an Alan Rowe Memorial Run to the top of Heartbreak Ridge by the club.

Difficulty

The trail has several areas of rock crawling. When you get to the Y on the trail, the easiest route is to the left. However, that route is off-camber and a narrow shelf road.

History

The Alan Rowe Memorial is located at the top of Heartbreak Ridge. The Alan Rowe monument was placed at the top of Heartbreak Ridge on Memorial Day, 2005, by the brothers and sisters of So Cal Broncos, and dedicated a few weeks later at Big Bear Bronco Bash IV. The monument honors So Cal Broncos brother, Major Alan Rowe of the United States Marine Corps, who was killed in action in Iraq in 2004.

If you choose to “go right,” the rock gardens will likely exceed your expectations as a “5.”. I’d give the trail a rating a 6 even a 7. I run 37 on a JKU.
