Red Lava - FS 42N03

This 8-mile point-to-point route starts at Medicine Lake Road, also known as Highway 49, and ends at another part of Medicine Lake Road. The route stays 1.5 to 2 vehicles wide, made of gravel and loose dirt, and can get dusty. The first mile is fairly sparse, with some pine trees but plenty of manzanita and bitterbrush. From there, the forest thickens up, bringing in more manzanita brush and taller pine trees within the Shasta National Forest. The further along the trail you travel, the thicker the forest becomes.
