Trail Overview

Quatal Canyon Road is a moderate offroad route in California’s Los Padres National Forest that offers remote backcountry access and rugged, scenic terrain for high-clearance 4WDs, dual-sport motorcycles, and side-by-sides. It is a fun, mostly straight trail cutting between California Route 33 and Mil Potrero Road. If coming from Pine Mountain Club, it is a short winding shelf road opening up to the canyon bottom, where it becomes mostly straight and wide. Be vigilant, as some deep, narrow washes are not telegraphed well and could easily cause some real damage if hit at speed. If you are paying attention, you can get some good pulls in between them, and once you get closer to Route 33, you can really open up and have some fast fun. Much of the route is manageable in dry conditions, but narrow shelf roads and erosion-prone areas demand careful navigation, especially after rain or during spring runoff. The trail is typically open from spring through fall, though it may close during fire danger periods or become impassable in winter due to snow. Cell coverage is minimal, and there are no services along the way, so fuel up beforehand and pack extra supplies. Be mindful, as there are some sparse residents in this area with pets.

I took this trail from west to east starting at the trailhead off of Hwy 33. 2/3 of the trail is flat dirt track, your average SUV could handle it. Things get much more interesting in the last 6 miles. The road narrows to a single lane, lots of ruts and small washouts, and one area in particular with a steeop dropoff that will give you pause if you don't like heights. I would give this area a bump up from 2 to 3 trail, but nothing a stock 4x4 can't handle with ease.

Trail was in great condition. Some deep ruts if you’re driving Baja style that could mess things up but other than that it was great. First 2/3 are mostly dirt packed roads and then it was up a bit of a mountain with some large gravel chunks. Nothing too difficult or dangerous.

Some of the washes across the road seem deeper at the top of the season but the trail is in good condition with no surprises.

Entered off of Highway 33. It's pretty bumpy. About five or 6 miles in you start hitting where the road has washed out. Luckily people had already put logs into the holes so it was a bit easier to get over things. I was able to make it in a stock 6th get 4runner. A few times the soil was loose so four-wheel-drive helped out quite a bit.

Long dirt road, hard packed dirt. Deceptive long stretches, be careful giving too much gas because there are big ruts in the ground that are hidden until you're right on top of them. Any high clearance 2wd should be fine during dry season, any car could almost make it but there's some (dry) river crossings that you absolutely need some high clearance for. The trail isn't too interesting, but there's some cool exploring to do on the offshoots. Do not use the unofficial paths to access the offshoots, just be patient and you'll find the marked path to access the offshoots for both motorcycles and 4x4. Right after a big storm there will definitely be a lot of running water, I imagine that the river crossings, which were dry as of 12/15/2025, can turn this from a 2-3/10 difficulty to a 4. Super empty, little dusty, saw a couple bobcats. Cool trail if you're in the area but probably not worth it's own trip.
