Trail Overview

Pilot Peak - Upper (FS 5S012B) is the rowdy half of the Pilot Peak experience. Unlike its milder lower section, this 3.1-mile dirt track cranks up the intensity, forcing drivers to engage 4WD and pay attention to their wheel placement. The trail climbs aggressively along the ridgeline, characterized by "punchy climbs" that demand momentum and deep, eroded ruts that threaten to cross-axle unwary vehicles. The dirt surface is often loose and uneven, making traction a variable you'll need to manage constantly. It winds through a dense forest corridor, occasionally passing through sections of private property. It is critical to be a good steward here: respect all "No Trespassing" signs and stay strictly on the established trail to ensure future access for everyone. It’s a technical, bumpy climb that rewards you with solitude and some great dispersed camping options near the top.

Difficulty

This trail earns a Rating 4 due to the combination of steep inclines and significant erosion. The "punchy climbs" mentioned in the description are often complicated by deep ruts running parallel to the track. These ruts can force your vehicle into off-camber positions or cause high-centering if you don't choose the correct line. Standard high-clearance 4WD vehicles (like a stock Jeep or Tacoma) will handle it, but crossovers or vehicles with low clearance will likely sustain damage or get stuck. Low range is highly recommended to control your speed and torque on the ascents.
