Trail Overview
Pilot Cutoff (FS 6S063A) is a trail that comes with a serious warning label: "Horribly Tight." While it appears on the map as a useful connector within the Silver Knob/Miami network, in reality, it is a claustrophobic tunnel of vegetation that feels less like a road and more like a hiking path. The user report is emphatic: pinstriping and body damage are guaranteed for anything larger than a compact UTV. If you are driving a Jeep, Tacoma, or full-size truck, consider this a "No Go" zone unless you are actively trying to sand off your clear coat. The trail should ideally be designated for 50-inch vehicles or less. For those on dirt bikes or quads, it's a fun, narrow shoot. For everyone else, it’s a paint shop bill waiting to happen. However, if you are slim enough to squeeze through, there is a secluded dispersed campsite waiting for you in the thicket.
Difficulty
This trail presents a unique rating paradox. The actual tread surface is relatively tame, mostly dirt with minor undulations, earning it a technical Rating 2. However, the extreme narrowness makes it practically impassable for standard highway vehicles without sustaining damage. There are no massive rock ledges to crawl over, but the tight tree gates and encroaching brush act as obstacles in their own right. This rating implies that if you fit, the driving is easy. If you don't fit (which is likely for most 4x4s), the difficulty skyrockets due to the inability to maneuver.
