Trail Overview

Picacho State Park Trail is a scenic, 14.7-mile route ideal for beginners, families, and offroaders looking for a relaxed drive with stunning desert vistas and access to the Colorado River. This well-maintained trail has a technical rating of 3 and begins on a wide, two-lane unpaved road that gradually narrows into a single lane as it winds through rolling desert hills and sandy riverbed washes. With elevation starting around 225 feet and peaking at approximately 920 feet, the route offers around 650 feet of cumulative elevation gain, providing scenic outlooks over the rugged desert landscape. Most high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SUVs, and SxSs can easily navigate the primarily loose gravel and dirt terrain without specialized equipment. The southern portion of the drive features tighter canyon passages and scenic dips through sandy washes, where lower tire pressure can improve traction on the loose gravel. Offroaders can explore several side canyons and offshoots along the main route, which lead to remote campsites, hiking trails, and historical points of interest near the Colorado River. While the trail is accessible year-round, the extreme summer heat makes winter, fall, and spring the best seasons to visit. A state park vehicle day-use fee is required if entering the state recreation area's main park boundaries, though the preceding portions of the road offer free exploration.
