Trail Overview
Set within a rugged pine forest in the Tahoe National Forest, Old Smith Mill Spur (FS 0089-040-20) offers a challenging and highly scenic backcountry detour. Functioning as a rugged connector route branching off of the primary Old Smith Mill road, this narrow dirt track leads travelers down toward a picturesque reservoir and river valley. Outdoor enthusiasts frequently tackle this rocky route to reach a sprawling, waterfront dispersed camping area that provides direct water access and ample room for multiple groups to set up camp. The driving surface consists of a narrow, bumpy dirt track littered with embedded rocks and deep, washed-out trenches. Navigating this route involves a steady journey through the timber, passing a handful of smaller shaded campsites tucked into the trees along the way. Closer to the water, the path becomes rougher with off-camber tilts and loose, silty dirt that significantly reduces tire traction. An unmarked side trail grants direct access to the large shoreline camping zone. Near the junction where it meets back up with the main forest road, the track crosses a deep, heavily washed-out section that demands careful vehicle positioning.
Difficulty
This rocky forest connector requires careful driving and capable equipment to navigate safely. As seen in the photos, the route features a bumpy, reddish dirt surface plagued by deep washouts, loose cobbles, and slippery, silty soil. Drivers will also encounter off-camber hillside sections where the narrow track tilts uncomfortably toward the downhill slope. Ample ground clearance and reliable four-wheel traction are necessary to safely negotiate the deep wash crossings and loose rocky ascents. Additionally, due to the extremely narrow corridor and encroaching trailside vegetation, exceptionally wide vehicles are highly discouraged from attempting this route.
