Trail Overview

Old Railroad Loop (FS 1S92) is a 3.3-mile out-and-back trail in the Inyo National Forest that starts at Sand Flat Cutoff and ends at Old Railroad (FS 1S13). The trail climbs and drops over 300 feet along its length. It is a one-vehicle-wide track made of sand and pumice, lined with sagebrush and pine trees. The trail winds through both open sections and a pine logging forest beginning around Mile 2.5. Crater Mountain is visible from various points along the route. Some sections have overgrown branches along the trail edges. The trail can get very dusty.
