Trail Overview

Tucked amidst the hustle and bustle of Southern California's heavily-populated coast is a slice of heaven called the Cleveland National Forest. This mountainous region is undeveloped, save for a few great trails connecting world-class views to cozy campgrounds. The North Main Divide Road enters the forest from the southeast near Lake Elsinore and climbs to one of the region's highlights, Santiago Peak Lookout. The road itself is fairly easy but steep and rutted in places. There is plenty of exposure on the cliff sides. Brush can get thick, leading to pin-striping, and travelers should be aware that trees come down across the trail often in burn areas, so be prepared to clear them. At our time of travel, one section was blocked by a massive tree and required a bypass. The bypass is steep and off-camber, but most stock 4x4s should be able to handle it, if approached with caution. Cell service is decent at the top of the mountain but spotty throughout the rest of the trail. Watch for oncoming traffic on the narrow shelf road and drive with respect and care for others.

Difficulty

When this trail was recorded, there was one section that was blocked by a massive tree and required a bypass. The bypass is steep and off-camber, but most stock 4x4s should be able to handle it if approached with caution. The road is generally narrow and caution must be used to find places to pass.

History

Santiago Peak lies in Orange County, in the Trabuco Ranger District of the Cleveland National Forest at an elevation of 5,690 feet. The original 70-foot lookout tower was built in 1914, and was removed by the CCC in 1935. A 35-foot tower with a 10-foot cab was built in 1951. The remaining structure is currently surrounded by communications facilities.

Closed at Indian Truck Trail (picture) to Ortega Highway (per forest service website). It is open from Indian Truck Trail over to Santiago peak and we didn't run into any other vehicles on that stretch.

I went up to the peak from Maple Spring and planned to head out to San Juan towards 74. But the gate was closed and couldn’t continue so I ended up traveling down towards Temescal. Not sure the gate at the San Juan was open but surely not the other end.

Easy trail, basically just a dirt road with some “rocky sections” (just a buncha small rocks that make the ride bumpy). Theres a few features at the top you can mess around on. Amazing views at the lookout.

The only access to North Main Divide Road is now through Indian Truck Trail or Maple Spring Road. The gate is shut at the crossing of Indian Truck Trail with North Main Divide Road. Starting at Indian Truck Traiil and heading West, there are some excellent views on this high shelf road, including to Catalina. The road is easy for a 4X4 but bumpy with a lot of small embedded rocks, so slow speed are required. It gets rockier but never difficult as you rise to Santiago Peak. The whole area is burned but nevertheless very pleasant.

Gate is closed from the south end of North Main Divide Trail all the way where it meets up with Indian Truck Trail. Not sure why it’s closed or for how long. North Main Divide is open beyond I Dian Truck Trail all the way up to Santiago Peak and beyond. Indian Truck Trail is open as of this report, however a very narrow trail. Not much room for passing much of the trail.

The North Main Divide road was open and reasonably well maintained. There were definitely some more rocky sections. As you go further along it, you do enter the burn recovery area where you see a lot of burned down trees and such. The trail closes near the Indian Truck Trail as there is still a lot of recovery going on.
