Trail Overview
This trail combines Mugler and Topping Spur A into a short but engaging high-country connector that delivers tight, technical driving through dense forest. The route features a narrow, twisty layout that weaves between large pines and firs, with natural, ungraded dirt and forest duff underfoot, minimal rock obstacles, and uneven terrain that rewards precise steering. Mugler (FS 23E300) changes designation midway to Topping Spur A (FS 5S503A), reflecting a newer extension of an older route, and together the spurs connect smoothly with surrounding Forest Service roads while forming a fun, technical loop option amid visible windfall recovery and corridors lined with bucked logs.
Difficulty
The rating is justified by the tight, twisty nature of the trail rather than large obstacles. The path weaves aggressively between trees, requiring precise wheel placement and spatial awareness to avoid body damage or mirror strikes. High clearance is recommended to navigate the natural, uneven dirt mounds and berms without dragging, and 4WD is useful for traction on the loose forest duff, especially in corners.
