Trail Overview

Moraine Picnic is a sandy but otherwise fairly easy trail. If you come off FS 7S09, there is a small rock obstacle that you will need 4WD (4 Low) and basic off-road skills. This trail takes you along the ridge on the West side of Highway 168. There are lots of overlooks but not many places to turn out, there are a few gated areas for the hydro access that provide spots to rest or pass other vehicles, otherwise it is single vehicle wide. Absolutely awesome views of the surrounding mountains and views back towards Bishop. Large Adventure bikes, be wary, there is a lot of sand.

Difficulty

There is one section with large rocks where 4WD is definitely needed for crawling and for getting through the sand, where there is a lot of steep grades in some spots and narrow shelf roads.

Rode up from Bishop on my dual sport bike with knobbies. The beginning is all deep sand. Then there's a rocky incline with a short steep technical section. I got stuck there and had to lift my bike to get better traction. After that it was all a pretty straightforward mix of rock and sand. Nothing too difficult for an experienced rider. Beautiful views up top. Coming down towards Aspendell there's a warning sign advising that only skilled drivers should take this route. It wasn't any worse than the uphill sections.

I went up Buttermilk Rd then back down via Moraine Picnic, they were both beautiful but especially the latter along the top of the ridge line, very cool.
