Trail Overview

Monache Meadows is a beautiful scenic valley surrounded by wilderness areas. The road follows and crosses the South fork of Kern River. There are great camp spots along the route and at the end. Explore, camp, fish, and relax along the river in this remote, secluded area. Open to green-sticker vehicles, but you must always stay on existing routes.

Difficulty

A few small hills and mildly rocky in places. Sandy whoop-tidos crossing Monache Meadows. River crossings usually shallow, but may be deeper in the spring. Suitable for high-clearance stock SUVs. Four-wheel drive is recommended but is not always necessary if you stay on main route.

Easy going. High clearance suggested. Needed to center lock in one area but probably could have used another line.

This trail is not an easy one for AWD cars. I installed skid plates prior to hitting it and I definitely needed them. I also went with a couple buddies (f150 & 4Runner) and they did have to pull me through one portion of the trail on the way out. Beautiful spot though!

Monache Meadows is huge and beautiful! Definitely worth doing! It is a long ways to the trail head. The written directions to it are from the west. You can also get there from the west. 395 to Kennedy Meadows to the Ranger Station. There are a few spots where good clearance is very useful. I did not scrape, but did feel like I used all of my 11.5 inches of clearance. Highly recommended!

Plenty of beautiful scenery once the trail opens up. One of the most scenic trails I've been on. The most challenging part has to be the big drop where you can take the left with deep ruts or right with the big boulders and a v notch. There are plenty of off shoots to go explore and lots of wildlife to see. Also, there are PLENTY of campsites along the trail and at the end there are some along the Kern River.

As I actively explore the 395. Mammoth Mountain was probably my favorite. but this place. Man this place does it for me. The national forest routes to get to the actual trail. have a couple challenging areas, but nothing a well equipped Rig can handle. I was surprised to see a couple of vehicles, like a Subaru Crosstrek. I definitely can see them going down, but I don't really see them going up that easy. so tread lightly. but the actual trail is super easy with tons of off shoots and signs posted everywhere. Sticking to the main trail towards the end, there is a river Crossing. It's about a foot deep. There are a couple off shoots that do offer water crossing. The deepest I found was about 2 feet. lots of cows everywhere so don't go that fast. lol. 10 out of 10 recommend this place. Gets cold at night.

Trail was in typical condition: dusty, rough/rocky in a few spots but easily navigable with 4WD. There is one section where a tree was down blocking the road, but it has been down long enough that there is now a path around it.
