Trail Overview
Forest Service Road 20S22 is an easy-to-moderate backcountry route on the Kern Plateau that serves as the gateway to some of the Southern Sierra's most scenic and remote destinations and the connector trail to get to Monache Meadows. The road winds through pine forest and open mountain terrain before reaching Powell Meadow, where it connects with the famous Monache 4x4 Trail. While 20S22 itself is relatively straightforward, it provides access to an unforgettable backcountry experience surrounded by wilderness, high meadows, and expansive mountain views. It also has two staging areas suitable for numerous vehicles and to leave trailers, etc. The road is generally suitable for high-clearance SUVs and stock 4WD vehicles in dry conditions, with sections of loose dirt, rocks, and occasional washboards. It's an excellent route for overlanders looking to reach remote camping, fishing, hiking, or to continue onto the more adventurous Monache 4x4 Trail. Because of its elevation and remote location, 20S22 is typically only accessible during the snow-free months.
