Trail Overview

Miller Jeep Trail is an iconic trail for folks in the southern California off-road community. Miller Jeep Trail is located off Interstate 5 about an hour's drive north of Los Angeles in the Los Padres National Forest. It is quite short--only three miles--but to get there you first have to take the much longer but easier Lockwood Creek Trail, which winds over several mountain ridges taking you from the Lockwood Valley to Lockwood Flat. Then the Miller Jeep Trail takes you straight up the side of Alamo Mountain. Once at the top, you have spectacular views of the valleys surrounding Alamo Mountain as well as Hungry Valley OHV. From there, it's a nicely graded dirt road down into HV OHV and eventually to the pavement.

Difficulty

This trail used to be more like a 3 or 4-rated trail. However, the rains in 2023 washed out sections of this trail and made some of the obstacles even more difficult. It should also be noted that, unlike some trails where the gatekeeper is at the beginning of the trail, here it's at the end (or near the end). 4x4s with at least 35-inch tires and a rear locker (front locker recommended) can make it up Alamo Mountain on Miller Jeep Trail with little or no body damage. You may also opt for a spotter on a couple of the obstacles near the top as well.

We happened across a closed gate while trying to access Miller Jeep trail. It’s tough to determine when the trail is open after a rain, or snowfall. Not much public info on Google. We ended up going to Gorman to get our off-road fix.

If starting from Lockwood creek trail, keep in mind the exit gate at Miller Jeep trail is locked at 5pm, and hungry valley OHV closes at 6. Lockwood and Miller were both fun, with multiple water crossings and steep, off camber climbs. Several boulder obstacles at the top of miller require high clearance, skids, and a good line to traverse properly. Completed trail with a 2024 Colorado on 35s and a 5th 4R on 35s- dinged up our skids pretty good.

Super fun first time on it. We did have some drama. One of our vehicles rolled. Downhill a little too fast and hit a rut and flipped. Everyone ok. Just a busted roof. The last part there are some big rocks to go over. I have a rubicon with no lift and I defo hit the bottom a fair few times. We also got to the gold hill road gate just after 5 and it was closed. We had to call 911 to get a ranger out to open up.

You can drive Miller Jeep trail to Alamo mountain, however, the exit through Hungry Valley SVRA that completes the loop is locked. There is no access through the park on Gold Hill Road, so plan accordingly to loop back on Miller Jeep or go somewhere else unfortunately.

The trail description is pretty accurate, lots of rocks and obstacles. Due to someone having a mechanical problem, we had to drive the top portion of the trail in the dark. The rock ledges look even uglier with the added shadows from my lights.
