Trail Overview

Mescal Canyon Road is an ideal trail for beginner offroaders and scenic explorers looking for an accessible dirt route that transitions beautifully between the high desert and the pine-covered slopes near Wrightwood. Spanning approximately 3.1 miles through the San Gabriel Mountains, this point-to-point route can be driven in either direction, though traveling from north to south offers a continuous uphill climb with an elevation gain of over 1,300 feet. The trail climbs from a minimum elevation of about 4,811 feet at its northern end up to a maximum of 6,139 feet as it nears the southern terminus near the mountain community of Wrightwood. Featuring a primarily dirt surface with sections of loose gravel and small rocks, the road is wide enough in most spots to easily allow oncoming traffic to pass. In the dry spring and summer months, two-wheel-drive vehicles with decent ground clearance can navigate this route comfortably, making it highly approachable for stock SUVs, SxSs, and high-clearance crossovers. Despite its overall mild technical rating of 3, drivers should remain alert for potential hazards that can change with the seasons. Multiple small creek crossings along the route can introduce mud and wet, slippery rocks, especially during the spring runoff, which may require four-wheel-drive to maintain traction. Winter weather can bring snow and ice, significantly increasing the difficulty and potentially requiring traction devices or seasonal closures by the forest service. Cell service remains relatively strong throughout most of the drive, providing an extra layer of safety, and the close proximity to Wrightwood offers convenient access to fuel, food, and other amenities. Whether you are shaking down a new rig or looking for a relaxing scenic bypass, this trail offers a reliable mountain-to-desert escape with stunning canyon views.
