Trail Overview

The trail starts at the third quarter into marked trail 3N26. There is shade for more than half of the trail from mature tree and a hillside for the majority of the trail. During certain times of year, there are shallow creek crossings and obstacles such as fallen trees and boulders from the hillside beside the trail. If the trail is done in the warmer dry seasons, it can be done with 2WD and stock height trucks or suvs. If done in colder seasons, 4WD is needed for the snow and ice that covers the trail. A shovel, axe/chainsaw, and lift would be recommended during snow and rain seasons due to rock slides and trees that often fall onto the trail creating large obstacles and slick trail conditions. Cell service is good for the most part on this trail, and the town of Wrightwood is nearby for food, beverages, and gas.

Difficulty

Trail is easy during warmer dry seasons and can be completed in a stock height 2WD truck or SUV. In wet colder seasons, 4WD is NEEDED because this trail becomes challenging due to rock slides, fallen trees, large boulders, and creek/ice crossings and snow causing large obstacles and slick/no traction patches on the trail. I approached from Vincent Gap down to Big Pine Hwy. Nice and mellow, as usual for summer months. Couple slightly rocky segments, little bit of ruts getting out to big pine highway, right at the start/end of the trail depending how you hit it. Beautiful views, still nice and green, and dusty.

Locked gate at the big pines highway entrance, but there is a bypass it's clearly visible. Trail itself was mostly a narrow shelf road with beautiful views, although about halfway through there is a downed tree that goes across the trail. Passable on 35s, long wheelbase will get high centered. Otherwise a relaxing drive. Trail gate is open at Route 2.

The trail is open if you access it from Highway 2 at Vincent gap, 32N6. It is an easy trail for majority of the way to the Jackson lake side ( where there is a closed gate at the summer camp). There is one obstacle that will require decent ground clearance and a good line. Essentially right before a creek there’s a large log. We tried to trim down the log and prior people have stacked some rocks. Eventually made it over and hopefully it’ll be easier for the next person. This is definitely not a hard trail. There are some sharp rocks though. Sliced a side wall of a brand new K02 tire. It’s a really beautiful trail but plan on making it an out and back unless you wanna do an illegal 25° sloped offshoot to get around the gate. The photo of the log looks small but my bronco Badlands on 33’s was getting hung up before we trimmed the log. Anything with higher clearance will have no problem.

I would say this trail is easy on one hand but terrifying on the other. Most of this trail if not all of it is along a steep cliff edge. On your driver side you are faced with cliff edges that have the potential of falling at any second. I can see why the high rating for the sheer danger. On the trail I had to stop several times to move tree limbs and rocks that had fallen in the road. Lots of sharp rocks as well so be careful. Snow made it exciting but I feel like the drier this trail is the more safe one would be. Is the trail doable yes….is it worth risking your life….probably not. I would say just take your time and be alert at all times. No need to trigger any rock fall.

Trail is in perfect condition. Any 2WD with high clearance can run it. Super easy all the way. It’s exactly the same as the entry trail.

Trail was pretty mellow. I was hesitant to try because I saw it was rated a 8/10. This rating was terribly inaccurate. Very scenic and easy. A couple small obstacles. Any stock 4x4 could enjoy the trail.
