Trail Overview
This scenic and mellow trail begins just off Highway 203 and winds through a beautiful section of the Inyo National Forest. Running parallel to the Ormat geothermal pipeline and newly installed power lines, the route offers a peaceful drive through old-growth pine trees and open meadows. The trail surface is a mix of sandy and gravel terrain, and its vehicle-and-a-half width makes it relatively easy to navigate, though you may need to yield to oncoming traffic in a few narrower spots. Along the way, you'll be treated to occasional views of the Eastern Sierra mountains, with interesting rock formations rising above the treeline in a few places. The surrounding forest provides a pleasant mix of shade and sunlight, and the peaceful nature of the area is occasionally broken by the distant hum of geothermal infrastructure. Though dispersed camping and campfires are prohibited, the nearby Shady Rest area offers alternative recreational options, including a softball field, soccer pitch, skatepark, and frisbee golf course, making this a great family-friendly zone for outdoor activities beyond just wheeling.

Difficulty
It is primarily composed of sandy and dusty surfaces, which can become loose during dry or windy conditions. While mostly smooth, you'll encounter occasional whoops from side-by-side traffic that may cause some bouncing. The trail is relatively wide--around 1.5 vehicles across--and generally flat, with no major rock gardens or technical challenges. However, high-clearance vehicles are still recommended due to sporadic soft sand and uneven sections. 4WD is not required, but it may provide added confidence in certain areas. The trail is an enjoyable, low-stress drive through the forest, ideal for drivers looking for a scenic cruise with light off-road character.
