Trail Overview
This route winds through a subalpine conifer forest filled with towering pines, fragrant firs, bleached tree roots, and dense manzanita brush. Travelers reach this trail via Rail Creek Road - FS 42N17 or nearby Gazelle Callahan Road, routes frequently utilized by the public to access popular outdoor destinations including Kangaroo Lake Campground, the Fen Nature Trail, and high-country access to the Pacific Crest Trail. As the road reaches the elevated summit ridge, eye-level views open up across surrounding mountain peaks and expansive horizons beneath dramatic cloud formations. Birdwatchers will find prime viewing along this ridge, where eagles and ospreys frequently soar overhead. A convenient flattened clearing off the main path provides a picturesque spot for primitive camping before beginning the descending turns. Lower down, the route transitions onto smooth pavement near Kangaroo Lake, where a newly updated campground offers first-come, first-served campsites, pristine lake access, and vault restrooms.

The summit section only offers enough clearance for a single vehicle, making passing difficult, while the descending switchbacks feature several deep ruts that require careful tire placement to skirt around safely.
