Trail Overview
Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area is a Northern California off-road staple. Tucked into the Gabilan Mountains just south of Hollister, this SVRA gives 4x4s, dirt bikes, ATVs, and UTVs room to explore a mix of wooded trails, hill climbs, ruts, rocks, and wide-open dirt.
This is the kind of place where you can make the day as mellow or as challenging as you want. Newer drivers can stick to easier dirt roads and rolling terrain, while more experienced off-roaders can head for steeper climbs, tighter turns, muddy sections, and obstacle areas built to test line choice and traction. Conditions change fast after rain, so a trail that feels easy one day can get slick, rutted, or more technical the next.
The Upper Ranch and Hudner Ranch areas are the main zones for 4x4 vehicles, with routes that range from simple cruising to more technical terrain. The wider SVRA also includes designated areas for motorcycles, ATVs, and UTVs, so pay attention to signs and make sure you’re on routes open to your vehicle type.
Hollister Hills is a great spot for a first off-road trip, a skills day, or a weekend with the whole crew. Camping is available in the park, and nearby Hollister has fuel, food, and other supplies if you need to restock. Download your maps before you go, bring water and recovery gear, and expect limited cell service once you’re back in the hills.
History
Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area was originally a private hunting club. Patrons used Jeeps, motorcycles, and 'totegoats' to get around the trails on the ranch. In 1975, the area became an OHV park.
