Trail Overview
FS 4N78 is an easy-going 2.9-mile out-and-back spur accessed directly from Fraser Flat Road just off Highway 108. The trail meanders through a healthy mixed conifer stand within the Stanislaus National Forest, starting among sunlit, open timber before transitioning into a denser, unharvested woodland canopy deeper along the route. The roadway consists of a wide, flat, and well-maintained packed dirt surface originally established to support local forestry and timber management operations. While the corridor primarily sees use from forestry operations, it also provides peaceful dispersed camping opportunities, featuring primitive sites clustered near the Fraser Flat entry and ending at an expansive clearing that serves as a dependable turnaround landing or rustic campsite.

Rated 1. This trail is exceptionally smooth, wide, and straightforward across its entire 2.9-mile distance. The hard-packed dirt surface remains consistently level and stable, free from ledges, major ruts, or technical obstacles from the trailhead to the end clearing. In dry weather conditions, the road offers simple, predictable traction and steady passage from start to finish.
