Trail Overview

This fine-dirt trail travels deeper into a heavily shaded forest surrounded by tall trees. Ruts begin around 3–4 inches deep, and several level, shaded campsites with fire rings are located within the first 0.3 miles. Around 0.5 miles, ruts increase to 8–10 inches deep. Camping is plentiful throughout the route, with options for both solo travelers and groups. The trail is van- and trailer-friendly, although the fine dirt can become more difficult when wet.

This trail is rated Level 2 because of the 8–10-inch ruts and fine-dirt surface. There are no significant obstacles, making it an easy and scenic route for most vehicles when conditions are dry.

History

Inyo National Forest was established in 1907 and today protects a vast section of the Eastern Sierra surrounding Mammoth Lakes. The area has a long history of Native American use, mining, ranching, and recreation, while its dramatic landscape was shaped by volcanic activity, glaciers, and the uplift of the Sierra Nevada.
