Trail Overview

This wide, fine-dirt trail travels down into the hillside through a heavily shaded forest, with much of the route covered in pine needles. Ruts are minimal, reaching no more than 3 inches deep, and the fine dirt can become more difficult when wet. Around 0.4 miles, several large campsites accommodate up to 12 vehicles each, with level ground and plenty of shade. The trail is van- and trailer-friendly with excellent camping opportunities.

This trail is rated Level 2 because of its fine-dirt surface and minor ruts up to 3 inches deep. There are no significant obstacles, making it an easy and scenic route for most vehicles when dry.

History

Inyo National Forest was established in 1907 and today protects a vast section of the Eastern Sierra surrounding Mammoth Lakes. The area has a long history of Native American use, mining, ranching, and recreation, while its dramatic landscape was shaped by volcanic activity, glaciers, and the uplift of the Sierra Nevada.
